Tips for using the FlyKingMountain.com Photo Gallery

NOTE: For problems, go to the "Problems" section at the bottom of this page

A. Register.

You won't be able to upload photos until you've registered. Give yourself an ID and password. We suggest you use your name, as in "adamsmith", instead of a handle like "kingpilot".

B: Create albums as needed.

When you register, you'll be given an album in the "individual albums" section/album. Go there. If your album isn't visible, click the "Your Album" link at the top-right of the screen.
  1. Go into your album. From here you can create sub-albums and post photos. We suggest you organize your space by creating sub-albums. After all, you'll be posting photos from every year, right?
  2. Create a sub album. We'll call our example "2007". After you create the album, you'll find yourself in the configuration window for that album. The default settings should be fine. Click on the "Back to album" link at the bottom of the left-hand task list.

C: Add photos to an album.

  1. Go into the "2007" album. You should now see a number of options in the left-hand task list. Click on "Add Items" in that list. You'll find yourself in the "Add Items" window.
  2. Along the top of the "Add Items" window, you'll see a number of tabs. Each tab is for a different way of adding items (photos, movies). We'll talk about a few of these.
    1. From Web Browser: This is the easiest. Just browse to a photo on your computer, Add a caption, then click the "Add Items" button at the bottom of the screen. You can add 2 items, then come back and do it again. There is a "More Upload Boxes" link under the last entry. Each time you click it, one more upload box appears, allowing you to add another photo. This may be an easy way to upload a photo, but it's not the best way to upload a bunch of photos all at once. More on this later.
    2. Link: Here you can supply a link to another place on the web. For example, you can link to a video that you've posted to YouTube.
    3. From Picasa 2: if you have Picasa on your computer, you can use it to upload photos.
    4. Windows XP: Vista too. Read the instructions, download and run the registry file (XP or Vista version), then publish photos directly from Windows. You may like this approach since it lets you upload many photos at once. This is what I use. See "Using Windows XP" or "Using Vista" below.
    5. Gallery Remote: Install this application on your computer, then use it to do your photo publishing. Gallery Remote has several features. See "Using Gallery Remote" below.
    6. Upload Applet: Sorry, we don't know much about this one. It looks like it invokes Gallery Remote.
    7. WebCam/Live Image: Here you can link to a webcam

D: Add captions to your photos.

If you used the "from web browser" tab, you can enter a caption at the time you upload your photo. Other methods will upload your photos, but then you have to manually add captions later. To add a caption, edit the photo:

If you want to add captions to a bunch of photos in one session:
  1. Get yourself into the Album you want to work with. You'll be looking at small thumbnail versions of your photos. click on "Edit Captions" on the left-hand task list.
  2. In the "Edit Captions" page, you'll see the thumbnails along the right of the screen. For each photo, there are four fields that you can fill in:
    1. Title: This shows under the photo, in bold, in the album view (thumbnails), and item view (full size). This field should have the file name of the photo already in it. You can change this, if you like.
    2. Summary: this shows in the album view.
    3. Keywords: optional, these help when searching for a photo.
    4. Description: this shows in the item view.

You can enter the same caption in both Summary and Description. Then both the album view and the item view will have the same information. Or, you can replace the Title text (file name) with your caption and leave it at that. Another possibility is a short Summary and a longer Description. Whatever you like.

You can enter captions for 9 photos, then on the bottom of the page click: "Save and Edit Next 9", or "Save and Done".
If you want to add a caption to a single photo:
  1. Under each photo in the album view (where you see all the thumbnail images), you'll see an "item actions" pulldown list. Click the down-arrow and select "Edit Photo". If you are looking at the photo full-sized, you can click on "Edit Photo" on the left-hand task list.
  2. In the "Edit Photo" window, you'll see several tabs across the top of the window.
    1. General: here is where you enter a description for the photo:
    2. Photo: this page should be blank. No changes needed.
    3. Modify Photo: If your photo is not oriented correctly, you can rotate it here. You can also re-upload the photo from your computer.
    4. Crop Thumbnail: self explanitory
    5. Watermark: If you want to protect your photo from piracy, you can create a watermark, usually some text, that overlays the photo, making it viewable, but unusable by others. They'll have to come to you to get a clean version of the photo.

Click the General tab, if you're not already there. You'll see the same text entry fields mentioned above. After you've filled in the the desired fields, click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

E: Explore other features of the Photo Gallery.

You can navigate by using the links at the top of the page, like "FlyKingMountain Photo Gallery >> Individual Albums >> Adam Smith". by clicking on a link, you can move up the tree to the root of the Gallery.

Along the left of the screen are the tasks available to you on each page. Try each of them to see what they give you.

F: Get help, if you need it.

There is a help system available from the provider of this Photo Gallery program. There is a link to it at the top of the Gallery's root album. Or, you can click here to go to http://gallery.menalto.com .

To go directly to the help section "Gallery2: Usage", click on This Link.

Using Windows XP (Windows XP's web publishing wizard):

A: Download and install the registry update for publishing to FlyKingMountain

In the Photo Gallery's "Add Items" screen, "Windows XP" tab, you'll see a link, "Download [install_registry.reg] (for Windows XP, etc.)". Click that link, then choose "Run" in the File Download pop-up. Click Yes and OK in the next two pop-up windows to complete the registry update.

B: Make sure your Windows Explorer is configured for this:

When properly configured, Explorer will show "Publish this folder to the Web" under "File and Folder Tasks", on the left of the Explorer window. And, you'll see thumbnails of your photos in the right pane.

Note: when you select a photo (click, Ctrl-click, Shift-click), the task list on the left will say "Publish this file to the Web" or "Publish the selected items to the Web".

C: Run the wizard to upload your photos:

When you click the Publish task, a wizard walks you through the upload process:

Notes:

1. After you've done the registry update, the next time you want to upload photos you don't have to get into Gallery first. You can turn on your computer, use Windows Explorer to select photos, then use the web publishing wizard to upload them to Gallery. At the end of the upload, the wizard can open Gallery for you to view the results.

2. If someone else logged into the Gallery on your computer, and didn't log out before quiting Gallery, the web publishing wizard will log YOU in as THAT PERSON. The last log-in was saved as a cookie on your computer and that cookie is used by the wizard. If the Wizard doesn't ask you to log in to the Gallery, and you're not sure if you were the last person to log in to it, quit the Wizard and go log into the Gallery before running the Wizard. If you do upload photos as another person, the Gallery Administrator can change ownership to you.

3. In the web publishing wizard, when choosing the size to upload, if you choose the largest size (1024x768), you'll still end up with an 800x600 version of the photo in the Gallery. The Gallery default is to limit photos to a 800x800 box. If you really want a photo larger than 800x600, you can re-upload the photo from the "Edit Photo" window, after changing the size parameters for that photo.   If you choose the small size (640x480), that's what you'll get. By the way, these sizes assume that you are uploading photos in landscape orientation. If instead they are portrait, see 4 and 6 below.

4. Photos are not automatically rotated during upload. You'll have to manually rotate the photos afterward: Under the photo in the album page, you'll see a pull-down list of actions for a photo. Click that list and choose "Edit Photo".    In the Edit Photo screen, click the "Modify Photo" tab (at the top). Here you'll see the Rotate options. Note: see no. 6., below.

5. You'll also want to add captions, etc. while you're in the Edit Photo screen. See the section above: D: Add captions to your photos.

6. If you rotate a photo already in the Gallery, by default you end up with TWO copies of the photo. The original photo is unchanged. A copy is made and THAT is rotated. To save space on the Gallery, you should not save an original copy in the Gallery. Here's how to rotate an image:

  1. Get into the Edit photo screen for a photo:
  2. In the Edit Photo screen, click the Modify Photo tab at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Modify Photo screen, uncheck the box labeled "Preseerve Original Photo" at the bottom of the screen.
  4. In the "Rotate" section at the top of the screen, click the appropriate button to rotate the image.
  5. Click the "Back to photo" option on the left-hand options list, to get back to the album.
  6. Repeat this procedure for each photo you want to rotate. Be sure to uncheck "Preserve Original Photo" each time.

7. If you have a photo that is in Portrait mode on your computer, after uploading to the Gallery, it will be smaller than you'd like. Since the wizard works with an 800x600 box, the photo will only be 600 pixels tall instead of 800. To make the photo the right size, you'll have to go to the trouble of re-uploading that image. Here's how:
  1. Get into the Edit photo screen for a photo:
  2. In the Edit Photo screen, click the Modify Photo tab at the top of the screen.
  3. In the "Scale" section of the screen, type in "800" in the first box. "800" will appear in the second box.
  4. In the "Reupload Photo" section of the screen, click the "Browse" button to navigate to the photo on your computer, then click the "Reupload File" button to do the upload.
  5. If the photo needs tobe rotated, see no. 6, above.

Using Windows Vista (Windows Vista's photo printing function):

Vista works like XP, but differently. XP has a Photo Publishing Wizard. Vista does not. Instead, in Vista you "print" photos from the Windows Photo Gallery to the FlyKingMountain gallery. Be sure to read the notes for XP, above, in addition to any notes in this section.

A: Download and install the registry update for publishing to FlyKingMountain

In the Photo Gallery's "Add Items" screen, "Windows XP" tab, you'll see a link, "Download [install_registry.reg] (for Windows Vista)". Click that link, then choose "Run" in the File Download pop-up. Click Yes and OK in the next two pop-up windows to complete the registry update.

B: Use Windows Photo Gallery to select and "print" your photos to the Gallery:

Notes:

1. Read the notes for the XP publishing wizard, above.

Using Gallery Remote (GR):

Gallery Remote is an application that resides on your computer. It allows you to: In this section, you'll learn how to download, install, configure, and use Gallery Remote:

A: Download and install Gallery Remote

In the Photo Gallery's "Add Items" screen, "Gallery Remote" tab, you'll see a link which takes you to http://gallery.menalto.com/wiki/Gallery_Remote. From there you can download the version of Gallery Remote for your operating system. Download, then Install the program.

Note: on the Gallery website, they refer to versions 1 and 2 of Photo Gallery. We use version 2.

B: Configure Gallery Remote

When you run Gallery Remote for the first time, you'll need to configure it. On the menu, choose: Options / Preferences. Here are the settings you should make in Preferences:
  1. General:
    1. Thumbnails: Uncheck "Show thumbnails" for now. Checking this tells GR to create a thumbnail of each photo you select for uploading. This can be helpful, but slows things down.
    2. Language: You can specify English, if you like.
  2. Upload:
    1. Resize before upload: check.
    2. Force resize to: 800 (this matches the settings in FlyKingMountain's Photo Gallery)
    3. Read EXIF from JPEG files to auto-rotate images: checked
    4. Captions: You can set this as you see fit. I use "do not pre-set captions"
    5. Allow HTML markup in captions and extra fields: check
    6. Slideshow/Preview: no change
  3. URLs: Click New, to add a URL
    1. Alias: You can put a short name here, like "FlyKing". If blank, the URL, below, will show on the URL list.
    2. Username: the name you gave when you registered on the photo gallery at FlyKingMountain.com
    3. password: the password that goes with the username, above.
    4. Gallery Type: Standalone
    5. Gallery URL: http://www.flykingmountain.com/gallery/main.php
    Click OK to save.
  4. Proxy settings: You only have to use a proxy if you're going through a firewall, as might be the case at your workplace. From home, you shouldn't need to set a proxy.
  5. Quick Config: we don't have this set up. Don't use.

C: Use Gallery Remote

  1. Destination Gallery: Pick the FlyKingMountain URL
  2. Click "Log In" button. You'll connect with the Photo Gallery at FlyKingMountain.com.
  3. "Pictures and albums on selected gallery" section:
    1. Albums: open the branch and navigate to the album you want to add photos to.
NOTE: I like to create the album from inside the Photo Gallery, then use Gallery Remote to add photos. If instead you want to try creating the album from here, click the "new album" button at the bottom of the Albums list.

If you created an album inside Photo Gallery, but can't see it here in Gallery Remote, that means that you don't have access to that gallery. Your id/pw do not give you access. You'll have to go back and check the properties of your album in Photo Gallery.
  4. "Override upload defaults" section: Check that the settings you made in Options are shown here:
    1. Resize before upload: checked
    2. Force resize to: 800, selected (radio button)
  5. Click the "Add pictures" button at the bottom left of the window. If that button is not active, you don't have permission to add photos to that album. Check the album properties in Photo Gallery.
    1. in the "Add pictures and/or whole folders" window that pops up, navigate to where you've stored your photos on your computer.
    2. select the photos you want to upload.
      • I like to pre-select the photos, putting the ones I want to upload into a folder of their own. That way I can simply select all photos in this step.
      • You can use Shift-click to select a range of files, or Ctrl-click to select individual files. You can use Ctrl-A to select all files shown.
    3. Click "Add" to add the photos to the upload list in Gallery Remote's main window.
If you selected "show thumbnails" in the options window, you will have to wait while the thumbnails for the photos you just selected are created.
  6. When all the photos you want to upload are listed in the "Pictures in selected album" list, you can click "Upload pictures", at the bottom-right of the main window, to begin the upload.
  7. After the upload is finished, go to the album in Photo Gallery to see if the result is as you wanted it.
  8. If you want to add captions to your photos, in Photo Gallery you'll have to go into each one and add a caption.

Notes:

1. With this configuration, the photo in the Photo Gallery will be in an 800x800 box, regardless of the actual size of the photo on your computer. Gallery Remote will re-size the photo before uploading it. The Photo Gallery is configured to allow a max size photo of 800x800.

Problems:

1: I can't find an "Add Items" option in my photo album

In order to add photos, you must be logged into Gallery, and you must be in an album where you have permission to add photos.

When you are logged in, you'll see your login name at the bottom-right corner of the screen, as in: "display mode: AdamSmith | guest"

When you are not logged in, or are in an album where you don't have update permission, you'll see on the left-hand task list:
- Add Album {maybe}
- View slideshow
- View Slideshow (Fullscreen)

When you're properly logged in to your album, you'll see:
- Add Album
- Add Items
- Delete Album
- Edit Album
- Edit Captions
- Edit Permissions
- Move Album
- Rearrange Items
- Reorder Items
- View slideshow
- View Slideshow (Fullscreen)

If you're in your own album and can't see the update tasks, notify the administrator. One possible cause may be that you've registered more than once and your current ID/password won't let you into this "other you" album. The administrator can reset passwords and see if your other settings are correct.

2: When I go to Add an album, I don't know what to type into the fields

When you create a new sub-album, you're presented with a screen of fields to be filled in. Remember that this form was created by geeks, who typically can't converse with ordinary folks. Here's the fields:

Field
Name (required)
The name of this album on your hard disk. It must be unique in this album. Only use alphanumeric characters, underscores or dashes. You will be able to rename it later.

/users/AdamSmith/___________

What it means
This is the name of the folder that will be created on the web server. It looks like a path to a folder on your own computer, but it isn't. Notice that the name has forward slashes (/) instead of the back-slashes (\) you'd normally see in a path like this.

Sorry, got geeky there. Just know that this field needs to be unique on the web server (you'll be told if it isn't), and it must not have any strange characters. Make it short and sweet - just numbers and letters. No spaces.

Field
Title
This is the album title.

What it means
This Title will display under the icon for the album. It'll show in both the album view that contains this album, and in the album page once you're inside this album. Keep the Title short.

Field
Summary
This is the album summary.

What it means
This Summary field has a bit more information than the Title. It will also display, along with the Title, in the album view that contains this album. You can leave it blank if you like.

Field
Keywords
Keywords are not visible, but are searchable.

What it means
Just like it says, words here are used if you do a search of the Gallery looking for a specific photo. You can leave this blank if you like. I normally do.

Field
Description
This is the long description of the album.

What it means
Again, just like it says, this is a long description. This description only shows when you are inside the album.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that these fields are the same as those for each individual photo. In the Edit Photo screen, General tab, you'll see these same fields. Here's an example of the Name for a photo: /users/AdamSmith/ernsbarb/IMG_3023.JPG    You can see that this points to the actual location of the photo on the web server.

After you've created the album

After you fill in the desired fields, above, and click "Create Album", you'll find yourself in the "Edit Album" screen. Note that "Edit Album" on the left-hand task list is in bold. You can now edit any of the parameters for your new album.

DON'T.

At least, you don't have to. The default settings should be fine. Simply exit this screen by clicking on a navigation link at the top of the page, or on the "Back to album" link at the bottom of the left-hand task list.
